Default Therapy

I've been aware of the benefits of carving for a few years now. We've had a bit of a crisis here, my wife being confined to bed most of the day. Added to the two dogs we've a third a 5month old pup. You got the picture.

Now this is not about me on the pity pot. I've realised the therapy of carving. Once all the "to do'" are completed and the dogs run I carve. No not the TV not music but carving and music.

While my carvings need a lot of getting better I can switch off, and thats a true blessing.
Thanks to all of you for helping me in my learning progress.
John

John,

Sorry to hear about your wife. I'll be thinking about her and you. And you are so right about the carving and how it can lower the stress level. They say a dog lowers stress too. And you got how many?? I suspect you had better pinch yourself every now and then. Again, you and your wife are in my thoughts.

You are right about the stress relief...a lot of us here (I have noticed) are disabled/poor health/or just plain retired and bored and find a great theraputic benefit in carving. I know for me it helps fill the days with some meaningful activity instead of sitting around feeling depressed or sorry for myself. I highly reccomend carving to folks with too much stress, so I guess it needs to be universal given our current world. I hope your wife improves, and that you continue to enjoy and benefit from your carving time.

You're right.

My cat girl has been part on my therapy when I had to retire from work because of health problems, and carving played a big part after that. It keeps my mind and my hands busy, and when I get good results, it makes me me feel like I achieved something.

Sorry about your wife, and as someone mentioned, many people benefit from wood carving on this forum.

Gilles

John, I hope your wife will improve, but you do have carving to relieve stress and that it does.It got me through all my years of the job, and my Mom and Dads passing. Also you have a great sense of humor, which we all need very bad. I still laugh at the remark you made some months ago, that you would have eaten your dog months ago if you had to rely on your carving. I know you were kidding but thats what I'm talking about. So keep a stiff upper lip and your wife will be better before you know it. I'll also say some prayers. fred k

Some of my most ambitious carvings were done while my late wife was recovering in the hospital. While she was sleeping, I'd go outside and work on my carving. Isn't that why they call them "reliefs?"

Spot on John, nothing better than relaxing with a good carving, some nice music and a good cold beer. I hope your wife gets better soon. All the best, Joe.

It definitely is a stress relief, thats for sure. I've been working a job I hate for about 2 months now (only 4 days left of it, thank gods), and I've found that spending at least a little time (half hour or so) just sitting and carving is enough to work out most of the stress from the day.

Can't wait til I have all that free time to be able to do MORE carving. Hopefully I'll still be able to get the wood to do so!
