I would invest in some books and Fox Chapel had 39 pages of books on woodcarving if you click up on top by Lora Irish. That is how I got started. My wife gave her Father a bunch of books, then I inherited them and the rest is history. Start with a beginr=ers book and se where that takes you.
Good Luck
Jim

First term to remember is
swarf (noun) The messy soup of metal, oil or water and abrasive particles after tool sharpening.

Flat Plane carving had me puzzled for a minute, too. Instead of rounded surfaces, in a face, for example, these carvers can somehow figure out how to approximate the shape with flat planes of material. Hope I got that right. Take a very close look at the picture examples posted in that section.

in the round.....as obvious as it sounds, 3D
flat plane....Scandanavian style, flat cuts with very little or absolutely no rounding.
low relief....remove s mall amount of wood from a background and the finished part projects out from the background.
high relief....where the carving itself stands out on its own, such as an eagle on a sphere...
caricature.....human or animal with exaggerated extremities....head, hands and or feet.
portrait...exactly what you think.

just name name a few

Here's a few I use:
It's just a nick = I'm going to the emergency room to sew it back on when you aren't looking!
I just need one more tool = I'll always need "just one more tool"
I'll put this down in just a minute = I'm going to carve for another hour! or so...
I'd better get the chips off the livingroom floor = I'd better get the chips off the livingroom floor!
There is this thing I need = someone else has one and I'm jellous...
"magic knife" = the knife that makes the perfect cut everytime and is eternally sharp. Still looking for this one...
Carvers glove = a cut/slash resistant kevlar glove that was in the toolbox when I got the nick.
hope they help...
Dan

Where are we? #10 or #11 or so?

" *^%^&%# " : the word you say over and over when an important piece breaks off a half-finished carving that you are absolutely in love with.

Snow shovel = chip shovel when the chair won't move any more
