Default Tagua nuts

Has anyone carved Tagua nuts? I was talking with the pyrography Sue Walters from Australia Sunday at the ICC (actually bought a burned tagua nut charm from her) and she said they carve well with diamond burrs. Has anyone done this?

Bob

Bob, I have 'sort of' carved tagua nuts....made bolo style retainers for crusher type hats. sliced the nut into thin 3/8' sections, then carved the Philmont brand emblem into them with a small carbide burr. worked real well as far as carving goes, but the durn things finally gave out due to getting wet from rain and sweat!

Still have a couple in my work box waiting for some inspiration!

Al

I have two in my 'possibilities box' but haven't tried carving them yet. Here is a page with several galleries of carvings, burnings, turnings, and scrimshaws.

Yes Bob I have done many of them I do woodspirit faces on them and drill a small hole and put a leather thong through it.(No not that kind of thong) .LOL I give them away to kids at show as necklaces. They burn really nice, when I am finished I buff them with a scotch bright pad and put a low luster finish on them.

What are the best bits to use? I have a dremel but really haven't used it that much, so I don't know really anything about the power carving. Is there a good site on power carving bits?

I hope you’ll enjoy this video about Tagua, The Ivory of Ecuador. It is in spanish only, but the scenes and footages are amazing. I promise I will post the english version, or at least with english subtitles very soon.
