Is sweet gum a good wood for carving? What would it be used for?

Sweet gun is great for carving, its harder than popular and holds great detail,

I've made a bunch of woodspirit canes from sweetgum saplings. Like Thomp said, it carves good and the bark looks great and holds tight if you chose to leave it in place.
