| | Swaying Man Kachina Swaying Man
8 1/2 Inches Tall
5 1/2 Inches across from ear-tip to ear-tip
Cottonwood limb, basswood feathers
Hi All, this is my last kachina of 2006. I started him prior to making Christmas ornaments. So I had time to study him while carving on other projects.
He is painted using acrylic, the feathers on top his head are carved from basswood and burned. I decided not to paint the feathers as every thing else was painted it would create a nice visual brake. Sash was carved from basswood and attached.
The cottonwood limb had a nice curve to it and that is what helped me to decide on the Swaying Man kachina.
He is called Swaying Man Nayaiya Taka because of the way he dances. He appears in the Hopi Plaza Dances on the Mesa's and is part of the Corn kachinas. He is also based on the belly-acher meaning arms and hands close to the body (carved as one.)
I don't have a base for him yet, all my cottonwood limbs are around 4" dia. and I will need something around 6" dia. So that means a trip to the creek to look for either a nice dead root or limb.

| | Re: Swaying Man Kachina Hi Woody01 and Mark, thank you for looking at my Swaying Man. It's fitting this is my last Kachina of the year. Don't know how many I'll carve in 2007 all have been for gifts or myself. They are enjoyable to carve especially the belly acher dolls. I really enjoy paintng them they are all so colorful.
Thanks again guys,
Kathy |

| | Re: Swaying Man Kachina Hi Bart, thank you I like the colors too. At first I didn't think to much of the black and white. Adding the red ears and red speaking tube with blue center added just enough interest to brake the stark black and white. This one is mine it's a keeper. My very favorite one is Crow Mother (avatar) but that one is going to my daughter for Christmas.
