Question Supply sources?

Many new woodcarvers, like me, are seniors and every little bit of savings in the hobby budget is appreciated. I have bought some tools and books new from advertisers on this site, but I am also looking for a source for resale tools, books and videos. I have found some books on bookfinder.com and I can find some tools on ebay but would like to know of a For Sale bulletin board for woodcarvers. Hope I have not offended anyone by asking for this. I know that Woodcarving Illustrated makes their income by ads but not all of us can afford to buy everything new.
Thanks,
Gone Again

We're actually planning something like that for our website (my concept is a a woodcarvers market set up similar to Craigslist (which is a great place to get deals on lots of different items). It's under development now.

Thumbs up Re: Supply sources?

That is so awesome. Thank you thank you for doing that. I like to buy new when I can but it is not always in the budget. What a great way for carvers to network! I will be watching for the "Grand Opening" of the carvers market.

Have you checked Craigslist?
craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums

You might find some tools there too!

Bob,
Thanks for the idea. I am finding that wood carvers are a very friendly and helpful group. I am glad I found this bulletin board.

As far as wood supply goes, you also have options. When Home Depot or Lowe's orders their Lauan, it usually comes on a solid 4/4 (8/4 on the main support pieces!)teak pallet. I have found that a $5 donation to the workers 'coffee supply fund' every once in a while will get you their used pallets for free (they also come in solid oak sometimes too). Visits to local millworking and architectural manufacturing companies are also 'goldmines' for all kinds of wood species.
Best of luck in your carving endeavors!

Jim

Keep your eyes open for pallets that are snow white in color. I found some up the street from my house--they were used to deliver kitchen cabinets. Initially, I thought they were basswood. They ended up being aspen--which is fine with me. I got about 20-30 1x4's and 1x6's and 9 2x4's from three pallets. The only thing is you need to watch where the nails are or were. I couldn't pull them out because they had twisted shanks. So, I just used the reciprocating saw to cut the boards off the 2x4's. I made two 24"x36" carving tables out of the wood. And I'm carving teddy bear pins out of the scraps. And I've still got a lot to go.

try half.com A huge supply of used books and videos. I have bought a lot of items off that site and had good luck dealing with them. Jared

I forgot to mention addall.com. This is a website where you can put the author, the title or the ISBN number of the book and it will give you a list of sites with the prices of the book--new or used--and the shipping cost (providing you put in the state where you live in the search). I usually shop on Amazon or the publishers' website and see what's available. I'll get the ISBN number and use that in my search. I have bought a number of books that were like new--maybe a crease in a page, a dent or a scratch--just like what you would get if you bought something at Fox Chapel's dent sale. But I have gotten some really good deals--and saved a lot of money on books..
