| | Summer doldrums? Hi All,
Well it seems as if the summer doldrums have hit...not a great deal of activity on the board...but what there is is informative and helpful.
Today In Portland, OR...it was a very toasty 97 degrees, lots of bright sunshine and not a single cloud. The weather prognosticators have indicated that we are experiencing a heat low...warm(are they joking or what) dry winds from east of the Cascades. Fire danger is extreme by all accounts.
I am even to hot and sticky to want to carve...or is that just lazyness? LOL!
Well til next we meet...
'may the wind be at your back, may the road rise before you, and may you be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows your dead!'

| | Re: Summer doldrums? Hi, I don't know if it's summer doldrums or just being busy with everything going on. I've got a Canvasback waiting patiently for his eyes and a finish. But with coaching softball and family reunions and jobs he'll have to wait. I started a santa while on Vacation and haven't had time to pick him up in two weeks. But it should slow down soon and my carving can be my #1 distraction agian. Chahlie, I liked the old Irish toast.... Gergie,

| | Re: Summer doldrums? Here in Vermont we haven't hit 90 once this summer. Despite what many people believe VT is like, that's unusual. We have had more than our share of rain though.
But it is tough to find the time with all of the family activities, yardwork and work on the house this time of year. Last week I was on vacation though and since my dog and I are early risers, I usually had a couple of hours to carve before the rest of the family got up. This week both the dog and I are going through withdrawal.

| | Re: Summer doldrums? Doldrums, I should be so lucky!! Seems this has been the most hectic year of my life to date! Right now I should be (and want to be) painting a carving but instead I'm painting rooms. My daughter and son-in-law are building a new home and are at the painting stage...that's the stage I can help with! Hopefully this weekend will do it and I can get back to some carving fun before the stenciling of the house starts, at least that can be done here and there, not at break neck speed!
Next year I swear I'm painting a few rooms in my own house, since daughter has so graciously offered to help!! Callynne |

| | Re: Summer doldrums? Hi All,
Whee-doggies it was hot here today...official temp 103 degrees. This temp can be deceptive, because our National Weather Service station is located at the Portland airport which is located right on the Columbia river. They sent me on a late delivery today and it was 106 degrees in Sherwood, Oregon, which is about 25 miles south and west of the airport, and there were isolated temps from the metro area as high as 108 degrees....it's 2340 here as I write this and it's still above 75. This good-ol-boy is a might uncomfy! Tommorrow is supposed to be about the same maybe 5 degrees cooler...wow it might only get up to 99 guess I will let the yard work go for a while longer...darn!
I have been thinking about rising a bit earlier and carving in the cool morning b4 I go to work....of course I would have to go to bed earlier...hmmmm trade-offs, trade-offs!!
Well ya'll have a goods evening. I think I will go take a cold shower and try to get some sleep.

| | | Re: Summer doldrums? Good carving weather in New Brunswick, but good weather to be out doors doing whatever also. Just finished a comission , and have a Kestrel on the go. But it is difficult to discipline myself to work indoors. There is a new wood shed to build, and wood to get ready for winter. All enjoyable jobs, its difficult to decide what to do. I guess I will get off the computer and work on the Kestrel. Have a good day everyone. |

| | Re: Summer doldrums? Hi All,
Well Hi_Ho I grew up in south Texas, San Antonio to be exact, and my mama was right proud of how well she and dad raised their 2 boys. She often said she drowned all her foolish children at birth...especially when me or my older brother did something to make her think she had missed one...LOL! I left south Texas 28 years ago because I didn't love the heat.
I can cope and deal with just about anything the environment throws at me...I just learned long ago that on really warm days, unless it causes serious bodily injury or great damage to property it can wait til it cools down. Many times my dad would wait til after mid-night to install a new cooking line in a restaurtant...it was cooler, the kitchen wasn't fired up trying to push product out the door and we could do it right w/o hurrying and making mistakes. Or if it has to be done take your time and drink lots of water and look for shade often.
Oh and Hi_Ho...heat is heat, anybody that says 'well it's hot but it's dry heat' is crazy. Certifiable. LOL!

| | Re: Summer doldrums? Well, we have a cool front come in here in SEK and believe it or not, 74% here today. What a change from the 97 and 98s we have had with humifity 89%. heat index to 110. Rained yesterday and grass needs mowing again. can;t wait till the 2 week mowing season instead of this every 5 or 6 days now. It does cut into the carving time for sure.
Regards. |
