I have found that making your own study sticks is not only less expensive and good practice but let's you more easily copy the results. With the wealth of online tutorials it is easy enough to make a study stick for the most common studies. My woodspirit study sticks are 18" long 1"x1" sticks of scrap basswood and have steps carved on all four corners. I have six now made from various tutorials. Making your own also allows you to experiment with new techniques without risking a full carving. |

Well Guys I you have given me lots of information on Sticks, and I appreciate it very much, thanks. Now I have to decide what kind and where to get them. To me they sound like they are helpful. As I like to do different projects I'll need different kind. Merle |

I have several study stick and once you understand and follow through on the cuts the study sticks are reminders. Mine are hanging up also and like lynn stained and wipe off the excess to show the cutd better. I also Have a stick from The Bishops that both Phil and Vicki carve eyes and nose and completer face in and they make good references. Yes, for the price, I do believe they are worth while.

rick dont have a secure ordering system, I order from him over the telephone if i use a credit card, otherwise ill just send a email... once he has your card number tell him to keep it on file and from then on you can order from email. without disclosing your credit card over the unsecure email system.. his telephone number is on his site, and i find him or theresa there all the time. Web: www. littleshavers. com e-mail: rick @littleshavers. com e-mail: theresa @littleshavers. com Phone: (206) 767-7421 I made a few study sticks myself , but if your trying to learn eyes and your not good at them i wouldnt suggest you to make one and wind up only to practice your mistakes, you wont get better that way.. there are lots of sticks out there, some of one subject, or others in a totum pole effect with several stacked on top of each other, with each segment being a different chacariture i just cant justify the price knowing how cheep the castings are to make, you see that poly resin junk everywhere for under $10.00.. for the price of some of the study sticks out there you would think they was made of wood and hand delivered by the carver their selves, I would love to have one of every kind made but cant justify $$. bishops has a great set of hand study guides 5 pieces on a chain per set 2 sets $50.00 ill start collecting them when they get the market saturated and the price drops down to something more reasonable.. jmho thomas

I'm a bigginer carver and I bought a set of study sticks for eyes, ears, and nose. It's helped me alot. More experianced carvers have a good mental picture of what they are doing and how to go about it. I hope to progress to that point then I won't have to rely on these aids. When and if that ever happens, I'll pass the sticks along to someone else that may need them. KEEP BARKIN |

Thanks Thomp I'LL remember that about Ricks Little Shavers. It looks like a good place to buy Carving supplies. I went to Mountain woodcarvers and have a couple comming. They had one of Santa Clause that I might get later on, if the ones I have comming helps out. I have a feeling that they will. I also found some thru WCI after I had already ordered mine. They are the same as I bought. Merle
