Kathy,
If you wish to use a mallet with your tools, they need to be at least "Intermediate" length, with full size tools preferred. If they were purchased in either of those lengths, then yes you could use a mallet.

While I do own several Full Size tools, I use them probably twice per year. Since most of my carving is under 12 inches, palm tools work best for me.

Projects where I required mallet driven tools include; two 28 foot Totem Poles, a 6 foot hillbilly, a 3 foot mariner holding a salmon, and several beach carvings (large logs that are carved and left where they lay on the beach).

The nice thing about larger mallet-size tools is, you can still use them without a mallet, just gently pushing, if they're sharp. You might take bigger bites using the mallet. In any case keep your tools sharp!
