Smile Stock for flower carving

I have some dogwood that I can cut round slices ~3" dia(lathe turned) any thickness. I want to try my hand at carving some tudor roses. My question is: will the grain direction cause me more problems than if it were a resawed pc? Since most of the cuts will be across the grain-sorta radial, will this be a hinderance? I'm a novice, and yeaha, bass wood would be easier, but I have trouble with definiton on most soft woods.. thaks,pw

Hi PW,
Not sure if my attachment was don't correctly but...I've carved may roses via end-grain (if I understand your question correctly). It's been a while but I don't recall any horrible experiences other than the expected. You just have to be careful and take your time so you don't break through the pedals. I actually think you get a nice appearance this way.

This one is in walnut but I've done soft woods as well. Sorry it's not a beter pic but it's the only one I have as I sit here.

Dwayne
