I've never seen a carved belt buckle so it would be interesting to see what you come up with. I expect relief carving and chip carving would lend itself well to the general belt buckle shape. I'd probably start by looking at bolo ties and seeing what shapes and such are carved in them, then you might get some idea on what and how to carve your belt buckles. |

Only thing I could say about carving belt buckles, is don't try to carve them while you're wearing them! LOL Bob

Chuck.... Wood might be a bit lite to stand up to the rigors of some of us more portly folk but have you given thought to collecting old metal belt buckles and modifying them to receive wood inserts and and/or laminations. There are a lot of real pretty woods out there that are just begging to be shinned up and shown off. I think that you're on to something. A belt buckle sounds like a might fine medium to do it with!

My mom and dad were rockhounds for as long and far back as I can remember and before I was born, until they were not physically able to do it anymore. They bought "findings" for making belt buckles and putting their polished stones into. You might look into rockhound supplies and see what's available. There might be something you could mount on the back of the finished belt buckle. Also, as a long time leather carver, I know that Tandy leather supplier had all kinds of kits including belt buckle kits. You might find some hardware there that would work for you.... PS I would strongly recomend that the grain of the wood be going the width of the buckle instead of the height....just a thought. |
