Default Staining a chip carving - question...

I took a class from a very talented chip carver about 5 years ago, don't recall her name at the moment. My question is, if I remember correctly, she said she used Minwax 'gel' stain on some of her chip carvings and that was why the cross grain cuts didn't stain darker than the other areas. Does that sound right (am I remembering correctly?). Maybe someone can tell me some other way to keep that from happening, if not. I do have couple of pieces I want to stain, (basswood)..should I use a prestain too?
Thanks...
