Default Staghorn Sumac Woodspirits

Hi gang,
There has been some interest in Staghorn Sumac so I have posted two pictures on the picturetrail album in the woodspirits album the larger picture is of a piece of sumac approx 8' in diameter I have seen some about 10' although most of it is only about 1' to 2' diameter.

It may depend on location. I have seen small sumac 'trees' here with 6-8 inch diameter trunks and 10-15 feet tall. I think that these may be the 'mother tree' of the large stands of sumac they are in.

Smokey,
I agree with Clifford there always seems to be a mother tree surrounded by her saplings. Sometimes there are a number of mother trees one thing is for sure where you find one you will find many more. I am told that around the Niagara Falls area there are some Staghorn Sumac that are larger than that.

Geez, Colin, now I'm going to have to check out some of our 'sumac sites'! I don't recall seeing any large trees, but then again, I NEVER considered them worth looking at......your carvings have changed my mind. I'll let you all know what I find here in Upper Michigan!

Well if you find any that are 8-10 feet in diameter--I'll have to go see them for sure.

I just noticed that Colin used the ' = ft mark instead of the ' = inches mark in his post. A 8-10FT diameter sumac WOULD be something special. LOL

Y'll have different type of sumac than we have in SEK.Mostly poison to those the are allergic. Same as Poison Ivy and Poison Oak(Not the oak tree kind).
