I think I am making this too difficult however, I was watching the Frank Russell DVD and he had a pattern for cutting sandpaper for the split mandrel. Any idea where to get the pattern from? Thanks

The pattern for the paper would depend on the diameter of the mandrel. Getting the width should be simple enough...just the width of the mandrel. Length will be somewhere around 3.14 x the diameter of the mandrel + 1/2" to 3/4" to allow for the insertion into the split. Hope this helps. Al |

I have the pattern but it is at work. I won't be at work until the 13th. If you haven't found the pattern by then let me know and I'll scan it for you.

I have a split mandrel for sand paper, probably not the one you're talking about..... my problem is I can't seem to roll the paper tight enough to get it to stay on the mandrel after I've glued the end on to the roll?? I think Frank Russell indicated to use cloth backed sand paper instead of paper backed if I remember correctly, just a thought.

Hi Ken, I hope you got the pm about the source for cloth backed sandpaper..... Yes, cloth backed is the only thing to use. I buy mine by the roll through the Hummul Flier out of Penn. They have corse on up to very fine grits. I buy a lot of my bits through them too. Dull Knife, Some times the roll of cloth will not fit snug enough to stay on the mandrel when in constant use. I usually run into that when I am removing the bit from the handpiece because you pretty much have to grab it by the sandpaper to pull it off and guess what? Off the mandrel it comes.... so I take a tiny drop of super glue, dab it on the mandrel and shove the sandpaper back on. After a few seconds, it's ready to go again. The only thing is when you are ready to take the old paper off and put new on, you might have to soak it in acetone for a little bit to get the old one off. |

Aha....so that's the secret. (cloth backed sand paper). The mandrel that I have was from a lady carver, and she used the yellow sand paper. I've basicly given up on using this type of sanding...it takes too long to get it ready to use and then it doesn't last all that long any hoo....that is, of course, if I could get it to work in the first place. Thankx for the info. |
