I am a fairly new whittler and i want to make my mother a spiral ball-in-cage candle stick. i would make the bottom round and narrow it to a central shaft with 3 spiral "bars" for the cage and leave a ball in the middle. then the top would widen out a bit and be left with room for a candle to be inserted. if anybody can help me with the design and with ideas of what kind of wood to use id really be thankful. and if you can also help me obtain the wood id really appreciate it as right now im in school in NYC and there isnt much good wood around. maybe lime or basswood? im not even sure what would last the best. thanks, Shmuly |

I suggest you look at the work of Spiritsock in the whittling section of the Carver Galleries for help with ideas for your spiral ball-in-cage candlestick.
