Default Spam message

Hello everyone,
I've just removed a rather obscene thread posted on our forum. First I want to say that we at Fox Chapel are truly sorry such a thing was posted on our forum. We do not want these sort of things on our board!

That said, things get a little more complicated. We have blocked the woman's name and IP address, but since she posted as a guest, we can't block her e-mail address. It has always been important for us to allow guests to post to the website, so we are in a difficult position.

Also, if anyone who visits our site, even as a guest, clicked through her link onto the site, we are on their radar, and can almost expect more messages such as the one I removed.

I can monitor the board during business hours here on the east coast, but I have a life outside Fox Chapel . I can promise that as soon as I find such as posting it will be removed (If you spammers are reading this, be warned!!)

When we upgrade the message board, this will eliminate many of these problems. Until then, please bear with us if there is a posting in poor taste before or after business hours--as soon as I get to work, I will remove it with prejudice. You have my promise!!!

Again thanks Bob for your action I am sure we all realize that it is certainly not the fault of Fox Chapel that these things get posted. The Internet world is a very complex one and some of these hackers can get into some very secure government files so I am sure they are smart enough to hack into yours. We appreciate your prompt attention to the problem in fact we appreciate all of your efforts with the changes to this message board. I am sure I speak for the majority of the people who frequent it every day.

You got rid of it before I ran into it. Thanks. It seems to me the rest of us should be able to post a new message warning others of an offensive message. That would help until you can delete it. I'm surprised we haven't been bothered with spam more than we have. Thanks again for your efforts to keep this a user-friendly message board. Mike

Bob, in the admin control panel, there is an option you can check the box to enable 'Report a ' or Notify the Admin' I don't remember which it is. That way when something like that happens, a member can click on a link and it will send an email to the admin with a link to the offending thread. I used several different versions of Yabb and I'm pretty sure each of them had that option.

One other thing I would really like is that you guys check the box to hide the members list. It would help cut down on spam and viruses!

For the past month I having been receiving multiple emails containing viruses from different members from this board. When I check the header, it really is coming from an IP belonging to Charter.net in Saint Louis. When I changed my email address on this board, the messages started going to the new email address. Now I don't retreive them from my mail server, I just batch send them all to Charter directly from the server

There a plethora of 'vultures' out there. Several years ago, they invadedone of our Boy Scout Council's websites with a porno link....pretty darn low, as far as I'm cncerned, but there are a lot of low lifes out there!

Tanks for your prompt action, Bob!

There isn't much I can add to what has already been said, but there are more good people in the world than the likes of that. Here I go with another yarn, :, Our minister told me of a friend that told him that every time he went into the book store, he couldn't stay away from the porn magazines, and he didn't know how to deal with himself. The minister told him simply to stay out of the book store . If people are going to read and look at that kind of trash, they will find a link anyways. A friendly warning posted by one of our members directly under the link in question will keep most people from clicking on the link until it is deleted. I bit on the last one on this site, but figured this one out right away.

Might I say thank you BobD, for takin' out the trash!

We get enough offensive junk mail in our regular e-mail box, this board was always a sanctuary for me, where nice folks talked good simple honest carving.

I know that there are those who will keep on trying.....but thanks for at least trying to keep this place clean!

Bob

Thanks Bob for your rapid response. As we all know, the Internet is a wide open place with a lot of uglies out there.

Since I found this site a month or two ago, I have appreciated the friendly nature of its members and IMHO high moral standards!

Once again, we appreciate Fox & yourself keeping us a clean place for our discussions!

Jim
