Question Sources for carving wood

Where can I find 8" x 11" x" boards for deep relief carving? Can I use bass wood and stain it dark to look like mahogany?

Yep Heinecke! If you want to stain it, I suggest you use some min-wax prestain sealer on it first....I have some gel stain that is very controllable.....without the sealer, it will blotch something like pine does!

I saw 12" x 12" x full 1" basswood blanks at two recent carving shows for $5 each. Quality wood, S2S, no defects, and northern grown. Heinecke had their basswood at the Dayton show and must have sold a ton of it on Saturday since it was just about gone when the show opened on Sunday. Mike
