Default So, What is your favorite type of whittling or wood carving?

I guess mine is whittling--particularly my Whittlebears.

Recently I have most enjoyed sitting down with a bass wood block 1x1x 2 thru 4 inches and just seeing who pops out. I have a some idea going in but basically just start carving. It seems to relax me more when there is no predetermined outcome, and the characters end up looking better.

Hi Bob,
I can see why you love carving your "Whittlebears", they're always cute as can be.
Mine is picking up a piece of found and trying to find something looking back at me and then carving whatever it is out. If not, then I grab the mallet and tools and start whacking away until something shows up. Never was good at following directions so I just do it my way and carve until the piece pleases me.

Right now I like doing anything that will come out of a 1 x 1 be it 2 to 5 inchs tall. Seems like there are unlimited possiblities and easy to carry around with you.

I also jsut take a small piece of wood, my favorite is 1.5x1.5x4 inches, and jsut start on a little guy, leting the wood and the form in front of me dictate what he is. I like the results usually a whole lot better than wen I try to force my idea of a character on a block..the wood knows!!!!!

I carve mostly life size or slightly smaller fish and relief landscapes.

BUT my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE is making a poinity stick while sitting on the ground, leaning up a gainst a big ol' tree on a breezy summer day. I'll bet I've made a gazillion and four poinity sticks!

let see. A nice day when I can sit outside, all my tools are sharp, my bass wood hasn't dried out, the yardwork is done and my wife has nothing for me to do. If all that is in place I would be happy as a lark carving anything! Old country music and a cold beer would also be nice...

All different things.
Relief Carved Woodspirits, Santas, Caricatures/ Busts, I also do a lot of cowboys from blocks of wood, that is my favorite. Most of what I do is whittling because I usually only use a knife and a veiner.
