Question Small Scale Carving

I'm a beginner carver and am mainly working on picture frames. That means the width of the material (usually basswood) is 2" to 4" wide. Can anyone recommend a source of designs for picture frames? I do look at other frames for inspiration but could also use some technical, how-to information on carving picture frames. Thanks in advance -- John

For patterns, I's suggest starting here: Woodcarving, Projects Gallery, Carving Instruction

Thanks Claude, I've run across that site before but spaced it! In any case I sent them an email to see what they may have -- John

There are some great patterns for those widths in leather carving books. They have patterns for belts and those kinds things. Try tandy leather.

Here's a possibility, John. I haven't read it, but found it in a search at Fox Chapel Publishing...

I would recommend several books. The first are from Dover Publications 180 Varick St., New York, N.Y. 10014 The Dover books are soft bound and are fairly cheap. Hundreds of titles pertaining to crafts.

Victorian Frames, Borders and Cuts from the 1882 Type Catalog of George Bruce's Son and Co. (Dover)

Cartouches and Decorative Small Frames (Dover)

Decorative Frames and Borders (Dover)

Ornamental Designs and Illustrations by J.M.Bergling. Available through Gem City College, 7th and State St., Quincy, IL. 62301 This book is hardbound and if still available will cost a bit more than the Dover books. Gary

I find designs all over, books, mags, ect. Then I use my PC or photocopie machine to resize it to fit my work piece.

I'm learning how to "steal" designs with my grabber program and manipulate them on the printer. I also ordered several books and CD's from Dover and the CD's can be manipulated as a JPEG -- what the heck, they sent me a $15.00 off $50.00 coupon so they appealed to my Dutch shopping style! You know the style, 2 for 1 and discounts and I may open my wallet. Seriously though, appreciate all of the help you've given.
Thanks, John www.woodworksbyjohn.com
