Ah....buying tools.....always a big investment. I believe all the main tool manufactures go by that or a similar system. Looked quickly at my catalogue for Pfeil, Henry Taylor and Stubai, and they all seem to correspond pretty well. Sets are convinient, but expensive, and I find that I only use certain tools from the set, some never. If you can, attend a carving club meeting and discuss your purchase with some of the members, most will let you try their own tools there, so you may be able to save a few bucks and order just the tools you want, for now. What ever you deceide, enjoy your new tools, get them "well" sharpened! That is an art in itself and essential to a happy carver. Good luck and have fun. Bob

Generally everyone follows the Sheffield List. The only real differences are in the specialty tools... for example the sheffield list will list a 60 degree v-tool as a #41 while in a Pfeil Swiss Made it will be a #12, and a sheffield #45 will be a Pfeil #13... etc. Some others just call it what it is - a 60 degree v-tool. I would suggest before you buy to visit some websites that have profiles illustrated - http://www.woodcarvingsupply.com/index.htm for Pfeil, http://www.craftsmanstudio.com/html_...ving_tools.htm for Two Cherries, http://www.toolsforworkingwood.com/ has Two Cherries & Ashley Isles, http://www.stubaidirect.com/ for Stubai. These are generally considered the best manufacturers - if you can afford them, you won't be disappointed. If cost is a factor... buy fewer good tools rather than an inferior set of mediocre ones. Good Luck! rales |
