Hi again! As usual, I had just 1 1/2 hours this afternoon while my baby son slept, to whittle a bit. I wanted to try doing my dog, a Vizsla, in a simple standing form. I rough cut the blank, from my own sketch based on my dog this week at work. I sat at the kitchen counter and finished him up JUST before Joseph started crying and woke up.. whew! Well, better feed him and play a bit... the carving is too fragile due to the cross grain to give to Joe right now. But it will sit on the shelf for the time being in his room. It is basswood, and I carved it with the small blade of my Kershaw double-cross. I like that knife a lot, it is super sharp and carves well. AJC ![]() ![]()

I also have to say, even though there are some world class carvers here on the site, I feel very comfortable showing my "hack" job whittlings.. It is fun, and love to share my stuff. Here is the real Gibson! ![]() and also I added this to show my rough out.

Very well done Andrew!!! An excellent portrait of your friend, Gibson. I have an English Setter carving I started last year as a portrait of my Eowyn (actually it is more like I am her person than she is my dog LOL). I hit a point where it had me stumped and I set it on my "projects to be finished... someday" shelf. L.P.

Gene M has an excellent video of a whittled hound. I did one that I have a bone sticking out of it's mouth but everybody asks why this hound is eating brown brocolli. OK, so I could have done better on the bone part. f.y.i. - try using Butternut next time - it's a little more sturdy than Basswood IMO (I still wouldn't give it to a toddler though, with pieces potentially being broken off & EVERYTHING goes into the mouth - choking hazzard)
