I received word yesterday that Silver Dollar City is cancelling the annual spring seminar. We have been lucky, in SW Missouri/NW Arkansas to have had this opportunity over the past 14 years. It has resulted in a lot of new woodcarvers and woodcarving interest in this area. There have been problems with on-site logistics, at Silver Dollar City, over the past few years; but, I don't think this is the only factor resulting in lack of attendance. Last year there were slightly over 200 participants, down from around 400 a few years ago. I have talked to quite a few woodcarvers over the past year or so who are saying that they are cutting back on attendance at both seminars and shows due to the costs. Our local club, Ozark Mountain Woodcarvers, holds a number of short seminars throughout the year; but, there is nothing quite so enjoyable as participating with a couple of hundred others in a woodcarving event. |

Its a sad thing Paul .. Silver Dollar City seminar was a good one .. but I think this is a typical result of the sagging economy and people just cutting back .. Alot of carvers are not able to afford the cost of now .. but I do believe it will get better in the future .. A slump isnt forever Gene

Sorry to hear that. I've been wanting to go to that one but kept putting it off. Now I missed out. I hope Gene is right and this slump is only a slump.

this will open another door-- i believe that another seminar will come about-- its my understanding that a lot of internal things are at the root of the situation at SDC-- there is of course the rendevous in june and oct and another seminar at norwood in august-- as always when there is a need -- someone will step to fill the void. branson is a good place to host this because there are other things to do for non carvers and of course other sites to see-- well, branson kinda speaks for itself--

Sorry to hear about the Silver Dollar City Seminars closing down. I have had some great classes there and met some real fine folks from all over. Hopefully another will pop up and take it's place. Their is a New War Eagle Seminar going that starts up this September 13 - 17, 2010 at The Hide-a-Way campground on Beaver Lake, Rogers, Arkansas. There will be 13 instructors on the line up. Chip-carving, schrimshaw, 2 classes of caricature carving, realistic faces, beginner carving, bark carving, realistic animal, bird carving, tool vendor and some special attractions at night. Cost $175.00, $25.00 non-refundable and supplies/roughouts are extra. For more information contact Steve Brown, 1805 Forest Acres Loop Madisonville, KY 42431 or email sbrownwoodcarvin@bellsouth.net for an application. Charlie Wolfe |
