Question: I've done several carvings, for instance Mr. Cipa's, that I would like to add my name to for my family keepsakes. But what if I wanted to sell or share them with others? I would want to recognize the original artists concept along with my name as the carver. I've searched the forum and not found comments in this regard although I do remember reading about this subject somewhere. Is there an accepted method for doing this? |

Regardless who did the pattern, you did the work and as long as it isn't carved exactly like the original I think it would be fine to put your name on it. That's why I tell all my students that when they get a pattern they like to change it a little to make it there's. Just my take on the subject. www.sierracreekstudios.com |

I very rarely carve from a pattern but I did take a course from Jeff Phares a few years back. When I finished the carving I put on the bottom of the carving " Carved by Colin Partridge" from a pattern of Jeff Phares and dated it. I was really lucky because Jeff concented to sign the carving as well. Colin

I sometimes write "designed by xxxx" if I carve a rough-out that closely resembles the original... along with my own signature. I do this on pieces that I intend to sell.

You guys must write awfully small. I barely have room to put my initials and the date! I'm with Falconer. The signature on the bottom is for the person who carves it.
