Hello Hen

Most of my output involves house signs or stools, plates etc with lettering of one sort or another. Most of the design work is done on the computer the design is then transferred to the wood and carved. I'm always happy to help fellow carvers, what exactly do you need? I am due to start a house sign early next week, would it help if I did it as a wip?

All the best

Hi Peter
I'm in North West Cumbria. My group Solway Woodcarving have been asked/commissiond to carve two large sign's one four 4ft x 5ft 6" the other yet to be determind. We have plenty of oak boards for the large one and in tend to buy more if needed for the second. However after reading a little about sign carving we have been left with impression that oak may not be right choice? Both these sign's are to be outside, they are both very important to the community, we need to get this right. I'm basically a figure carver; Carving signs? Well! Lets just say this is not really my area of carving! We plan to use linseed oil as finish rather than a boat varnish.

Any advice would be great

Hallo Clive
5'6'' x 4' is one hell of a sign and it will need adequate support. I don't think you will have any problems with oak as long as it's properly finished and looked after. Presumably you will have to joint the boards together to build up the width, so good mechanically sound joints and a boatbuilding glue would be needed. I would use danish oil or teak oil as a finish rather than linseed oil which stays tacky for ages. Do you intend to colour the lettering at all? Because that might dictate what finish you could use.

Bye for now

Peter

Hi Peter thank you for getting back to me! I know that the letter's on the Abbytown sign (5ft 6"x 4ft)won't be gold guilded. More likely to by gold or black paint? It will be blocked/built up to give depth so a carving of the Abbey can be carved in deep relief, we have the service of a fully time served carpenter to do the build of the sign/sign's.

The other one will be to commemorate 150 years of Silloth-on-Solway Port. Still more in the planning and design stage.

Thank's again catch you later

Clive
