Default shows, rules judging

you all should vent your problems with shows and competitions on a different sort of thread. I'm stupid, I read every thing thats new on the board. I think the real cheaters should be confronted by the real snivelers........ I hate seeing the word 'cheaters' at the top of the list here... I think 'bark Magic' should be more interesting.....Art

Art,
This board is for everyone, and to vent if you want to and get the opinion of others here. There are some very talented people here with a multitude of ideas and opinions. I believe every one should be heard even if we all do not agree with what they are venting about. That what makes our countries so great , Freedom of expression to be able to express the way we feel. I for one dont get on anyones case for a topic unless they are putting someone down. Take the topics as they come if you feel you have something to say that will benifit us then by all means state it. I also read all the threads I comment on what I feel I need to and just go onto the next.
Colin

OK, I missed the point too. What was the point, if not to say that this was not the place to coment on matters relating to some quite un-sportsman like dodges performed by people who want to win show trophies at any cost? I was quite interested in the revelations made by L.N. All the carvings I have seen down here in Australia have been polished wood- no paint is used. as far as I am concerned a painted carving could have anything under the paint and I would put it at the bottom of the heap when it came to judging. You may as well be exhibiting a polyester resin 'carving' if the thing is covered in paint.
Do you judge a horse with it's rug on? Or Miss Universe wearing a Nun's Habit and Veil?
I shal now retreat to the fireproof underwear department!
Regards from Down-Under,
Hilly. ???

G'Day Mate! I too like natural carvings, but have to admit I have seen some fantastic things that have been either painted or stained  guess I am fickle, but I like 'em all!

I b4elieve if we disallow painted carving, we miss out, Period. I to like natural carving however, Seen pently of painted carving that I coveted. Take teri's Santa. If we disallowed those, we miss out on an artist who has several top notch skills. Carving and painting! Sorry Teri that is use you for an example but I wuld really hate to NOT see your carvings.
Miss the pointI guess on several things. But then, I have missed more than I care to miss. It is an age thing

Kenny,
I agree that there are some really nice painted carvings out there.....but....when you judge a painted carving are you looking at the carving or the painting? Would the carving still look as good if you dipped it in paint stripper and got rid of the paint? Would the painting look as good if it was on a flat board.
The other problem I have is not knowing the judging process over there in the US. Do painted carvings compete with those exhibited in clear, natural, polished or similar see-through sort of finish? I still have a lot to learn in this area.
folks.

Go to Salisbury Maryland to visit the Ward Museum and you'll see the world's best carvings, as judged in their annual competiton, all painted. The world of decoys and other birds is the genesis of a lot of the animal wood carving we do today, yet most are burned and painted to resemble real birds. Ditto a lot of caricatures. I like a lot of naturally finished carvings, such as architectural pieces, furniture, and spoons, and most of them would look pretty dumb if they were painted. There's a time and place for everything; never say never and never say always. Paint's fine when it adds to the carving.

OK, I'll go along with that! I guess I was being just a little 'one-eyed' in my dislike for painted carvings. Naturally a decoy would look pretty odd (and be totally useless) without the paint.
Silly Hilly! :-[
