| | Shadow carving A few years ago I did what I called shadow box carving. I constructed a box 18 in by 48 inch’s long, two and half inch’s deep.
Then I started carving out a scene, first the fish, because they would be the background and then all the for ground peaces, the rocks and vegetation ect. then an ivory vine that surrounded the out side of the shadow box.
Each carving was painted using water colors…
I was wondering if anyone else has done a similar project

| | Re: Shadow carving Carved out like relief carving? Or carved and added to the scene?
I've seen nautical shadow boxes or a ship under sail, an old traditional style, with the sails added, quite decorative. Just lately in Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, in Halifax, NS and the Keillor House Museum in Dorchester, NB.

| | Re: Shadow carving Each peace is carved and added to the scene, makes for a deep 2 dimensional peace. It was a fun project.
The paints I used where transparent so the grain of the wood in each peace was visible...

I remember after finishing it, I didn't want to let it go, it was a neat peace.

| | Re: Shadow carving I have not seen shadow box carvings, but it sounds like something fun to try. In the 60's there was a popular technique called bark paintings. A general landscape would be relief carved then different types of bark applied to add more dimension. There would be moss covered bark added for the roof, twigs became the porch posts, birch bark might be added over the tree trunks ... It was a fasinating finished work.

| | Re: Shadow carving I have yet to see a craving like what I carved.
The idea came in a dream that I had one night,as many of my ideas for carving do.
I remember seeing simular creations like you were talking about Susan back in the late 60's early 70's.

| | Re: Shadow carving Well, Just imagine Lynn's secenes with a box around them. Hmmmm Shaldow carving.
There is a local carver, Well local enough, within 60 miles of here who has done that. He created a scene and put a box around it and even carves a shallow relief on the back and added carved pieces to it. He has several at the Independence Carving show.
Neat stuff. |

| | Re: Shadow carving I haven't carved to many relief carvings, but only because my interests in caving, were else where. but!!
Ive been thinking about another shadow box and I think I would do it the same way except for the box...
The box should be in relief carving and the box itself from a single block 14" wide by 48" long, carving out 2.5" in depth..
So my question to you relief carvers, first of all is it possible? will the box hold together |

| | Re: Shadow carving Not a relief carver but I would say Yes it is possible/ Anything is possible once a mind is set to do it. Go for it. If you don't you will never know if you could. Now that would be a shame. eh? | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
