| | Sea Captain Last week I carved a crazy carving and named it a Country Gnome. With the horse type teeth and crazy turbin hat. I thought and looked at him over the wk end and I would just repaint him as a old Share Cropper. After re painting him,he still had thoses teeth and that dumb hat.
So Sat, I thought Id re carve this carving. First I couldnt wait to cut off that big hat or cap,Seeing it when Id removed some of the hat,it could be carved into a sea captains cap. Thus,I started changing the face and beard which had to be nicely trimed for a old sea captain. The insignia is carved along with the two buttons on his coat and his coat lapel.
Once Id carved the captain,Id always seen a sea captain with a olde pipe in his mouth. I had the chunk Id removed from the bigger hat and from it I whittled him a pipe. Hes 9 X 10 1/2 inches and carved from a pine board.
I think this carving has improved! Next time I will draw what Im going to carve instead of just hacking away and in the end havent to wonder what it is or what to call the carving liked Id done when I called him a country gmone!
As always your thoughts or comments are more than welcome.
Thanks for allowing me to share this, country gnome, this old share cropper and last but not least this "Sea Captain". LOL
:::Olddddddddd a sailing I will go::: Forrest

| | Re: Sea Captain Well sir, I have just the very ideal place to hang that ol' salt right here on my wall..........I would have been happy with either of those other Gents, but this old skipper is the bees knees. Wonderful carving and painting as usual Tn and thanks a heap for sharing with us.

| | Re: Sea Captain John from down under,Sir I just had to keep trying on this block of pine. I dont waste much and too cheap to throw any wood away is why this 1st carving the country gnome had to be changed. It was my fault in the begining by hurring and not planning what I really wanted to carve. Im glad you approve of this olde sea salty!! Thanks again for your nice comment! Tn~

| | Re: Sea Captain Doris, I dont or havent ever changed a painting or a carving but this one Id just started chiseling away on this block of pine. Ive not used my larger chisels and mallet but one or two times, being in such a rush plus Im still learning what each gouge and chisel will cut like,it just came out really dumb looking to me is why I finally just recarved the whole thing,I knew I had enough wood still left to do this.
I have a nice shop I build but work mostly in a spare bed room,a PC room,a art room, etc. I work on a large plastic table doing my little relief carvings but a larger one like this where Im carving hitting a mallet, yeaaaaaaaa I use a older PC chair thats not being used, kinda hard on the knees holding the chair from rolling and all,I hope in a few days to build me a nice wooden work bench with a good vise for holding a carving.
I always value your comments and thank you for any advise you have.
Forrest

| | Re: Sea Captain Amazing. I mean you are AMAZING, Forrest. When you get something in your head, you just go with it. I envy that. I just LOVE him as a salty sea captain, and salty, he is! I wish I had your sense of "vision in the wood" as easily as you do. This one is my favorite of the 3.....good work, my friend! Bonnie |
