Wicker. The flat stuff they make baskets out of - usually available in craft stores. You can trim it to whatever size you want, soak it for an hour, then twist, bend, etc., and let dry in the twisted position. Stems can be made of the round wicker (1.5mm or 2mm). If you can't find it in a craft store, go to an import store and buy a small wicker basket (unfinished) - then "deconstruct" the basket. If you can't find the flat kind, a larger round one can be cut down to flat - just soak it for an hour first and it splits nicely. On my web site, you can see one of the santas with a bag over his shoulder with scissors, thread, etc., in the bag. The strap is wicker. Claude |

Check at a flower shop (greenhouse) for those small bamboo sticks they use for plant support in displays. They are about 3/16" diameter...maybe as large as 1/4" and about 18" long. Some are painted green and some are left plain. Might make nice bamboo habitat. Al |

Craft stores where they sell miniatures trains and scenery accessories, these are the places where I buy this stuff. I need grass for a scenery and I know they have some. I already bought the sand for the road. Gilles |

My yard is a great source for all your bamboo needs. We've got it from about 1 foot to about 25 feet. We can't get rid of the stuff, we can't kill it, and it's the most stubborn weed I know. So, no matter if your gorilla is miniature, or life-sized, got you covered. C'mon over and help yourself. Make sure you get all the roots and tendrils. Otherwise, it just gets angry and even more determined to ruin my foundation. S~

It isn't clear whether the gorilla carving is a relief or "in-the-round." If it's a relief, I'd suggest that you incise the grass or bamboo around the figure. See the "Dachshund" or "Heron" in my gallery for an example of what I'm suggesting.

I used plain, old sawdust to make 'grass, hay and straw, things like that. And very thin brass is available to make great reeds, leaves, etc. Micro-Mart catalog - www.micromart.com , sells some scenic things meant for mini railroad train set-ups.

John... Do they have any shops over there that sell artificial flowers? I think Claude and Al are on to it with the bamboo or leaves idea. For example over here we have Michaels, Hobby Lobby and JoAnns. I can think of a number of ways to create an entire jungle.

Thats kick started my solitary brain cell, thanks. The carving is in the round, sorry I should have said. I believe mountain bamboo is their regulat habitat. Flower shop is the first post of call. Now this pup has partly chewed our linen basket Claude. I think I'll buy herself a new one! |
