Default Saburr Burr & Die Grinder

Guys new to the forum and carving(new, new, new)Since I will be purchasing some Saburr Burrs in the next few days, what do ya'll use to power these? All I have right now is a cheap pneumatic die grinder, but I can get it into tight places.Only problem after about 15mins,I have to put gloves on due to how cold it gets. What would you recommend that is compact and good for this job?---CJ

A lot of people use flexible shaft rotary grinders (Foredom, Mastercarver, Wecheer) with hand pieces that will accept 1/4" shaft burrs. Others use electric angle grinders with different wheels and others use electric die grinders. What size carvings are you wanting to do? That may help you decide as much as anything. I wouldn't have any problem using what you have for larger carvings and a pair of leather gloves would be recommended whatever you use, with the bigger burrs. The leather offers some protection and don't grab up like cloth gloves would. I don't wear them with smaller bits, but when the big ones get away from you, they can really chew up some skin!

I like the electric rotary tools better than air.You don't have as much noise either.Tony

I use electric die grinders as you can see by my picture I don't like to change bits or blades slows me down. I use a die grinder like one would use a gouge I guide the gouge with my left hand and push with my right. Notice I do have several Saburrtooth bits and blades on my grinders. I have adapted my carving style to grinders. I am into speed and they are fast.

Yea man that is Saburr bit I don't remember I think I got from Wood Carvers Supply. That bit requires the larger die grinder 8 amps variable speed I like the Makita brand.

If you like to go fast and strong the die grinder is the way to go. It has taken me many years to collect all my tools. I started out just using 12 tools none was power but you cant argue with power it is fast and effective. You have the right idea if I was starting I would be a power guy. Take a look at the chainsaw the ultimate power tool for carvers it may be your thing. Good luck my friend.
