Default "Who's interested in starting Friendship cane

Hi Gang,
Just got my latest copy of Woodcarving Illustrated and twigged me to start this thread. In it was a friendship can something I have been meaning to do for a long time but never get around to doing it. Looking for twelve carvers who would like to participate in this project. Be for warned that it is a committment of twelve carving's by you to be shipped to twelve different carvers. I would be willing to set it up if there are enough people interested. The twelve carvings would'nt have to be all done at once but there should be a time limit let's say three month's. Each carving should be at least two dimentional so that the block can be viewed from both sides. Having said that if it was a complete carving i.e. Santa head then that would be acceptable. The reason being you would not want a blank block on one side. The block should also be drilled to accomedate a dowl the size we can decide on before we go ahead.
So if you are interested please let me know. If the response is greater than twelve we can set up more than one cane.
Colin

Do we each have to do 12 carvings, is that how it works?

Yes each carver would have to do twelve carvings. I know it is a lot but in the end you end up with twelve distintive carvings from twelve different carvers.

That is being done on W3E the woodcarvers exchange Colin. I am in the middle of my second cane segment swap now. Since there is already a cane swap setup and going, you might want to just sign up on the list there, another cane swap is being set up now I believe. Oh, by the way, theirs is now an 8 segment swap and you do to to get a complete cane...of course you can do more or you can do a 'round robin' now and then, which is a segment that each of 4 corners do a corner on. Oops..sorry forgot http://carverscompanion.com/ExchangeHome.html :P

Colin,

Please add my name to friendship cane project.but can I offer a sugeestion in the preliminary stages.

Hi-Ho (Dave) is absolutely correct about W3e friendship cane onging carving, which is just fantastic, and anyone can get on board, if committed to follow through, and join.

But my suggestion to your question. After reading this months magazine I also thought this would be a great 'Board Project', but maybe twelve segements each is a little bit of a stuggle for some of us to committ to?

How about this, this board is often quoted in the magazine too, so why not use the cane article to kick start a twelve segment 'Frienship Board Cane' that we all do one segment, assemble the cane, then ship it to 'WCI' for a future short article/picture of the project. Maybe they would even committ a paragraph about each one of us too in the article/picture.

I believe, if we contact WCI with our interests, maybe they would give us a go-ahead postive yes to the project with future magazine space committment.

Any other thoughts, comments, suggestions to further this 'cane project'.

Great post Colin, I hope we can stir up some positive interest with our other board members.

i would be interested in Participating in a freindshipcane along as the time frame is not to exacting (12 carvings in 2 weeks )
another thought along the lines of coffemans suggestion a cane or a group project consisting of a chess set with the participants supplying1 or more pieces depending on the insterest.
i have been trying to get our little carving group interested in a group project that could be sold or raffled of for charity. my time lately has been limited so i haven't be able to push the idea

Bill,
I like your idea it sounds like a great plan. I have only one comment. What do we do with the cane once we have carved it? Or should I say what will WCI do with it maybe I suggest we give it to 'Big Brother or Big Sisters' to raffle off at aution or some other worth while charity. Please let me know what you think and I will try to set it up with just the members of this board surely it wouldnt be too much for 12 of us to do one block.

Colin,

I like the auction idea, I'm sure they get asked weekly from different community events for donations.

As we continue to gather twelve board members interested in joining along, I think we should contact WCI editor and discuss our idea with them to see if they'll 'Buy-into-it', if its a go with them, I'm sure we'll get more members interested in this 'one-time-carving' project.

Again, I think you came up with a great idea, hope we can get it rolling.

PS: i like your new website, good job.

I'd be up for the idea of ONE segment each with the cane to be donated to something worthy.

If that's what's decided, count me in - WCI participation or not.
