| | Re: What's everyone working on? Well, let's see,
I have been working on carving faces and have carved 4,what you might call wood-spirits / old men in the past month. 2 out of bass wood 5" tall, on Greenman style, one out of a sycamore limb I had, and one out of a hard peice of Oak limb I had laying around.
Also carved a grape and leaf pattern in a 2" cabinet knob. Boy what a thing I have gotten into with that! Now I have to carve the rest of the knobs on the chest I took it off of,7 more! And I dont know what kind of wood the knobs are but It is a hardwood tha crumbles easily, I suspect I am carving end grain, and the grapes are tiny. Had to use my magnfying light to care them. And when I finish that wifey wants me to do the same for all the kitchen cabinets. Did I mention that my wife is a grape freak!)
One more thing I am planning in the near future to carve her an 8' long x 8" wide valence, to go between the dining room and den with a grape pattern that I worked up from a "Susan Irish" pattern. But first as a practice peice I am going to do a family sign with part of the pattern 20"x18". I plan on posting pictures of the stuff I have doon as soon as I can take some. Sure wish I had a digital camera.

| | Re: What's everyone working on? Thank you everyone.....sounds like some very interesting projects ongoing! Paul, thank you for including the picture, beautiful work, even at this stage.
It sounds like lots of ideas are being tried and tested, new ground being broken, skill levels being challenged. Thats what I love about carving, you never know what you can do till you try. Grapes, Owls, figures, migraines (never carved one of those before) horses and mountain men, walking sticks, eagles, and more, tons of ideas.

| | Re: What's everyone working on? Trying to carve a little GI for a buddy of mine serving in Kuwait. The helmet came out more like a rain hat for a fisherman so this little guy's going to be a sailor in a rain slicker and I'll try the GI again. Unfortunately I've got plenty of time since my buddy will be there for about another year.
As far as freezing weather, I wish it was freezing here. It would have to warm up about 40 degrees to get up to freezing! Oh well, I'll flick the switch on our gas fireplace and carv a bit!

| | Re: What's everyone working on? Well I just started a Saw Whet owl, it is a birtday present for a neighbors 75th in March.
I usually start something like this in the last week, but maybe I am getting smarter in my old age.
It is only -37 (celcius up here)with the windchill today so maybe Colin will head to the gym today again. |
