Default Rust

I have a tool chest that I store all my clisles in. It has maybe 10 drawers and in the past I've had a pack of silica in every other drawer. Over time I've forgotten to throw the silica into the oven only to find bits of rust starting on my chisles.

Well I FINALLY found a solution that works for me - Goldenrod. The marine industry sells them to boaters and they come in various sizes. I have several 1 footers and a 3 footer on my boat. Then it occurred to me that if they can keep my metal from rusting down in the bilge then it should do wonders for my chisle chest.

I liberated one from the boat about a year ago and drilled a 1/4" hole in my chisle chest to pass the electrical cort thru. I put a new plug on and plugged it in. I put it on the bottom shelf thinking that'd be the best place to circulate air. It's also a good spot in that I keep my mallets there so I always open the drawer and can check it from time to time.

I've had it on for over a year now and can report that my chisles have not shown a speck of rust. So I thought I'd mention it here just in case some of you have the same results with silica. The attached picture is of a longer one but you get the idea. You can get them for under $40. The smallest one is good for 10 cu. ft.. They operate on 110V AC, are not a fire risk, have no moving parts to wear out and no chemicals to replace
