I noticed in the CCA rules that it uses the phrase "In the round" Does that imply simply three dimensional or does it imply that all details and attachments must come off the same block of wood (no glue on)? I always assumed that it meant that you must use a single block of wood and not add any additional wood. But the more I think about it, the more I think I am reading the rules wrong. Thanks for your input. Greg |

i think it means "you can go around the carving, and look it from all sides", so it means 3dimension... i dont think it requires detail or such

It means a 3 dimensional carving. Actually, it means that it must comply with how the Judge is feeling at the moment he looks at it. If he's in a good mood you might be okay. If his Denny's Grand Slam had runny eggs you might be in trouble. Almost forgot.....Even though they use them themselves, they don't like attachments.

Thanks Lynn and Doris, I have never entered a show or competition. I have done what I have done because I love doing it. However, I think that I would like to try a few competitions and use it as a platform to sell some more of my work. I have found that thinking about what a judge would like has sparked my imagination a litttle and my ideas have become more creative. Thanks for the help. Lynn, I did remember hearing that judges do not like attachments. Seems strange, some of the most creative work you have done involves really creative and cool ideas for the attachments. Your recent mail box and letters for example from the foreclosure carving were amazing to me. They looked so real. How you make the rope, the tears on the cowboy.... I could go on. I will add attachments because I like the carving... Good judging results will be optional. Greg |

Get the Denny's Grand Slam with scrambled eggs, eliminate the runny eggs. HEHEHEHEHEHHE. Notice more and more Denny's in this part of the country closing down. One of our favorite places for breakfast in Springfield Mo(Denny's) has closed also. Garon, ya ain't eating out enough.

Hi Greg, Lynn hit it right on the head about the judges mood at the moment..... But at our state fair, "in the round" means a full figure viewed from any direction... my last entry was hardly a single piece of wood. In fact it was a compostion of several carvings mounted on a base and the main figure had an ad-on also...yet another carving. I realize that some competitions have judges that are a lot more persnickity though. Good luck with your entry. susieq |
