Default Rose

The finished relief Rose I carved for my mother in law. This is the one that I had problems with the finish.
It is 10" l x 7" x 1 ", rose stained, leaves painted with a wash
ALl comments welcomed, good or bad.

Thumbs up Re: Rose

Great job! Super good depth - it really looks in the round. I think the finish is wonderful. I prefer a washed look rather than solid paint.
Keep up the great work

Excellent! That was worth the wait to see it. I agree that it truly looks 3-D, and your finish is perfect.
Apparently you conquered any "problems" you were having with it. Great job.

Kenny, you did a super job on the rose. She is sure to be delighted. You've captured the curve of the petals beautifully and the colour is great. Well done.

Thumbs Up Wow Kenny, your rose is gourgous it looks so real. How is it meant to be displayed? In other words as a wall hanging or attached to a chest either way would be lovely. Lucky mother-in-law you most really like her.

Thank you for all the kind words.
No, I don't think I perfected the finish as I was really surprise with this problem on the Rose. I finially lightly sand down the rose and reapplied the stain. I did notice that after the stain dried, it was a little darker than the petals but the little bride convinced me it look fine. Her eyes are better than mine and a few wraps on the head from that dang club I carved her, I went ahead and applied the finish which was Deft satin spray. Still not happy as it looked smoother before. But I guess I will never be satisfied in the outcome of any of my carvings.

Kathy, Iam thinking of mounting it on a piece of walnut. I don't know if I will outline it to match the rose. An inche or two bigger or a square piece like a picture. But yes, It will be wall mounted. Never really though of attaching it to a chest or keepsake box. Thank you kathy, gives me an Idea for another carving/ making a boz project.
Neat ideas come form this board for sure.
Now back to the , opsss, I almost let the cat out of the bag oon the Caricature Project II. Boy would Rick skin me alive. Well at least the knife would be sharp!

Ken that carving looks really great. As you asked for comments, I assume you wanted some constructive criticism, so here goes...hope ya ain't upset.

The carving itself looks near flawless, but with the painting, or staining, I'd suggest some mild shading in the recesses and some highlights on the forward most portions of the petals. Maybe dry-brush a couple shades darker red in the low spots and some pink or even yellow on the high spots. You seem to have achieved that effect on the leaves already.
