Well, guys & gals, as much as I grouse about our winters here in Upper Michigan, I LOVE em, and wouldn't swap em for Texas anytime. We visit S. California every couple years for a month os so and have spent a few winters in our trailer in Cal, AZ, NM etc, and are always glad to get back home. I walk out the back door into the woods. The snow along the river is stunning, and when it gets to -40 degrees, the waterfalls stiffen up into ice veils. Fog off the big lake frosts the trees in crystal whiteness, and in the spring when things start to freeze and thaw, the whole landscape is encrusted in diamonds when the morning sun hits the ice crystals. You can judge the temperature by the creek, creek of your step in the snow, and by how far your breath steams before sublimating into the air. It's hard to beat a snowshoe trek through unbroken snow, getting to places where no one has been this winter, and looking down over the valleys and creeks. You can't imagine how contrasting the blue sky is over a high bluff snow scene, with the dark greens of spruce and pine and white shafts of birch trunks adding to the concoction. And no snakes, scorpions or fire ants! OK so we've got killer mosquitos in the summer, but hey, life ain't all pleasant....gotta have a little misery so we appreciate the good times! Yup, I LIKE the winter here in the UP! C'mon up and have a look around! Al |

Not much dust in the part of Texas, plenty of fire ants and heat though. Got a few (lot?) of snakes too.
