Default repairing a split

Here is a piece I repaired for a client. It's from the mid 19th century,,carved in pine of General Grant. I don't have the step by step on this,,but I used pine to repair it. Splits never completely disappear but it looks better than it did. It's 6 1/2 inches tall. I also freshened up the paint and face a bit.

As they always say on the Antiques Roadshow,," ,,now if you got this repaired it would be worth,,,,"

This piece brought $3500.00 at Sothebys

Mark, you did a great repair on that carving. WOW, in the pix you can't even see it. I'll bet you were a little bit apprehensive on even touching it, being as it's worth so much.

Nice repair but what they actually say on that Antique show is "If you hadn't had it repaired it would be worth.......!" Almost every Roadshow I've seen has a story about an antique that was untimately devalued by repair or refinishing.

Thanks guys. But actually Lynn refinishing will usually kill the value, but generally they do seem to recommend to have something repaired ( rugs, furniture etc. ) that had some damage.
It can go either way I'm sure,,but usually repairs are favored. And of course if there were no damage,,well the value just takes off.
