Default Remington, Homer and Hopper - a blast

End of a great day. Got up early with my wife, on the train by 8 AM. Downtown Chicago by 8:45 and in line for the Chicago Art Institute. We had member tickets to a special showing of Winslow Homer. Super stuff. Now to carve some of his kind of work in wood. I really like his different phases: Gloucester, MA and Maine, Cullercoats, Eng., Adirondacks, and the Bahamas. There are so many ideas to borrow or by which to be inspired. We also saw Edward Hopper. Not as impressed by his work. Won't try to carve too many of his ideas.

And then there is Fredrick Remington. If anyone needs to be encouraged in their carving or wants to see some neat ideas for western pieces, check out the Art Institute. They do not have an overly large collection but it is great. If you ever need help getting to it, let me know and will see how I can help.

Where do you go view the art of others which inspires? Anywhere near Chicago. I'm out side in the burbs - Lansing.

Sounds like a great day to me! Homer and Remington are two of my favorites as well. Love Homers work. I have a great book of photo plates of Remingtons paintings. Another good western artist to check out is Frank McCarthy. Beautiful work.

Hi Forrest, We didn't get into the Loop. We came in underground and stayed near Lake Michigan for the day. Been there a lot though. Have driven through Cicero, but it is north west of us.

Do you think you could catch a scene like Homer's in wood, Forrest?

Thanks for the heads up on Frank McCarthy, Corey. Will check him out.

Homer and Remington ...... wow, two great sources for inspiration. So very different styles but so very original. Two of my favorites, though I have never tried interperating their work into carvings. Remingtons carvings are spectacular and his drawings so full of stories. Two great artists, you were very fortunate to get to see them.

You said it right, Bob. Great details in both of their works. There was one Homer piece of a fishing guide in the Adirondacks - Russ Wallace? I think his name was, where Homer makes the glint in his eye by taking his knife to the dry painting and flicks away a small spot to reveal the white paper underneath. Truly a lot of fun.

Not what I would call close to Chicago but could be made in a daytrip.
If You ever get into NE Iowa The Billy Brothers Clock Museum at Spillville is a must see for any carver. Home

My parents took me there when I was still small enough to sit on daddys sholders and I have been back several times on my own since.
But I love the Alpine Region of NE Iowa, some really pretty country.
I might add that with the price of fuel, this is about a 175 mile drive from my home and we will probably vacation in the area This summer.
Plenty to see within a short drive.
