You might want to start out by checking the Patterns section here on the left. The WCI Whittling Supplement has a couple articles on carving pins and small santa ornaments which would also make great refrigerator magnets. Also try googling clipart for the pattern you want and you will probably get ideas there.

Woodcarving Illustrated - How To Magazine for Carvers - The Cat's Meow

This is one from the pattern section Bob mentioned. WCI recently had an article on no see ums and in my opinion they make neat refrigerator magnets

Gary,
I am sure you will find many ideas for Fridge magnets; which by the way, since they tend to be small, you can by pins for and wear for festive occasions.
The one thing that I have learned is that not all magnets are created equal especially in the size and weight of the carving they will hold they will hold. You can buy rolls of the soft dark grey stuff and it has a stickum back. This stuff is OK but the cats will easily knock these off. The good ones are small round and silver in color. These; while a bit costly will definately pass the cat test. Of course always be on the lookout for the free ones from broken appliances and toys etc.
Have Fun,
Jim

I do a lot of magnets. I like them because they are small enough to be quick, and I don't have to carve the back. I've done lots of Santa and Elf faces, a few stylized angels, several round smiley faces wearing different hats.

I've thought about doing Celtic Knots as magnets. A ball-in-a-cage would be neat. How about a chain with a magnet at each end?

sage advice

at a wedding i noticed that the tiny flower arrangements that were on every table (with the name cards), attached to the presents (given to the groom's friends and the bridesmaids), and given to the other female participants (to keep them on their wrist while reading or singing, i guess) each had a small rare earth magnet glued to the ribbon ... and no one really wanted the flowers (well, no one i asked) and after the dinner party, the flowers on each table were to be tossed into the trash (where several more were found !)

yes, i have no shame, but anyone can keep their eyes open and score the best magnets for free, now that they are being in so many products - including ephemeral items

Any flower, design, animal,......that is small can be carved as a fridge magnet. I have usually drilled a hole for the magnet before doing the carving and then gluing in the magnet after doing all the carving.

I have one which is a side-view of a hummingbird in flight. Maybe 3" tall.
