Default Red Cedar Woodspirit

Bought some red cedar on ebay and it arrived the same day as my WCI with Colins article inside, so I had to start chipping away at a woodspirit as my first cedar project, This piece of wood had a branch in the lower left side so I carved in a corn-cob pipe that the spirit is smoking, but the picture doesn't do it justice, the detail of the pipe is lost in the red cedar, can't capture it in the picture. Finished it with clear satin spray, had lots of fun, wish I could have worked in more red into the face area, next project is an Indian. Enjoy.

Really beautiful work, Coffeeman. Never seen a wood spirit smoking before. Now I must quietly go and add red cedar to my “MUST CARVE!” list.

That's beautiful !!

Is that regular, old Missouri style red cedar? We just hired a landscape service to cut down maybe a dozen big red cedars trying to get more sun light on the garden and lawn. Because of our recent snow and rain they aren't even finished yet. I sure didn't know that was worth carving. It can't even be burned in a fire place or wood stove.

Beautiful work Coffeeman, great use of the colour incorporated into the piece. Gorgeous stuff Cedar. Nancy.....dryed, Cedar makes great kindling for a woodstove or fireplace. We burned wood years ago and had a 1/2 ton truck load delivered from a saw mill, the slabs off the sides of the logs, worked like a charm and kept us warm all winter. The main wood we burned was Beech and Maple, big beautiful wood too, a shame to burn it. Would have made beautiful furnature.

Very nice spirit you have there! I always love the way that the red heartwood in eastern red cedar bleeds through the outer white/cream colored outer wood and the red "tears" certainly work in your favor, making it more interesting than the average woodspirit!

This unique wood is quite common in my neck of the woods and a local backyard sawmiller fellow seems to always have a few chunks n' slabs that he lets me gather for my carving pleasure. Back in 1991 I carved an Indian face into a two foot piece and the red heartwood was at an idea depth which left the entire face red in perfect contrast with the white/cream colored outer wood.

Some lady at work offered me a hundred dollar bill for it and I've always regretted letting that Indian go because I've never yet come across another piece of wood that worked like that one did. I didn't even get a photo of it since it was still the pre-digital age for me. Oh,well. Thanks for sharing.
