Lorax,
Great advice you have here, again shows that the best information is here on this message board. I have never had a bad experience so I really cant comment. I take chegue's from people but I seem to have a sixth sence about people. Maybe its because of my police career but there are some people I wont take a cheque from. As far as mail order my policy is when I recieve your payment I will send the item. This isnt out of the ordinary buy something off of ebay and its the same policy.
Hope this has helped sorry to hear about your bad experience but you know the old saying 'Once bitten twice shy' I sure it wont happen again.

Lorax,
Yep, I got burned on one of the first carvings I sold. It was an expensive lesson but one learned well. Money up front or no carving!

If you don't end up getting the money from your 'client' (and don't forget that he moved--not you---so he should have had no problem finding you) but if you know where he lives, you can check to see if that state has a small claims court. If it does, it usually only costs you a small fraction of your loss to file a charge and you may recover it officially. If you find out that there is such a process in his state, you can always use it as a leverage to get him to pay up BEFORE you file a claim.

Good Luck. It's always a bummer to find out that you can't trust everyone--especially everyone on this site.

Lorax, my calling the individual a deatbeat may have been a little harsh, but I don't think so. My wife sells alot of our old unwanteds on Ebay and I deal with at least one of them a month. As a matter of fact, I just paid for an old set of Uncle Henry chisels I bought on ebay last Thursday - using buy it now and paid with paypal. On Saturday I still hadn't heard from the seller. I rechecked paypal, he claimed the money, I rechecked the completed auction page and what did I find? He is no longer a registered ebay user!

I then cross referenced his contact information that he used to register on ebay, his info from paypal, and the info from the auto-generated ebay invoice. The name was the same but not the addresses or telephone numbers!

I used the links I gave you to find him, gave him a call and assured him that I would be visiting Denver shortly if I do not receive my chisels! I also told him his street address so that he would have no doubt that I know where to find him.

Today I had a postal card in the mailbox to go in and sign for a package from Denver

Sometimes you've got to act tuff and make some noise to get an idiots attention. If that dude is in the USA and he bought something from you online, but did not pay for it, he has commited a FEDERAL OFFENSE! If you let him get away with it, he'll continue to hurt other people!!!!!!!

Invest some time and report this SOB! Here's some more links:

http://www.ifccfbi.gov/cf1.asp

And by all means, contact this guys state attorney general and his local law enforce and file complaints with them!

Need help finding out who to contact, email me his contact information or at least his city and state, and I'll get you what you need. I can also track him to his city by his email address. Just so you don't think I'll contact him myself, just give me the part of his email address after the @ I can locate him anyplace in the world

Like the Kids say, KOOL DUDE. I LIKE IT!!!!. The only thing worse than getting burned, is to let it go, and just live with it. No way hosea. Go get em. I bankrupted a business a long time ago, I just let the credit get out of hand. My own fault for not paying attention, but it is a lesson that has stuck with me over the years. I pay my bills, and expect others to do the same!!!!! Good advice by Randy48.

I myself could never do this, guilt would be tremendous, but alas some people really don't have any moral fiber.

Good morning folks,

I read this thread with much interest. Unfortunately human nature still hasn't changed much, not since the days when I was a young man working as a Correctional Officer in a maximum security prison. What an education.....you learn very quickly that there are people who go through life think up ways of ripping off the rest of the population, and think nothing of it. Actually, they are quite proud of their accomplishments.

Later, when I left the Penitentiary Service and entered industrial security, the experience always made me very determined to charge and prosecute every thief and low life when we had the opportunity.

Randy 48 has the right idea, go after the guy, never let it go, it just encourages them. Good luck.

Bob

One of the clients in my website gallery had a similar experience. She received a token down payment and shipped the carvings before receiveing the final payment... even though the contract we use says that will not happen.

I have written several letters to the delinquent buyer and have also contacted the Schenectedy, NY police department, but they haven't replied any better than the buyer.

I agree... get the money before you ship the item!
