| | Re: question for lynn Arnie......I only strengthen the Red Iron Oxide. Doing a "cold" face like I just did with the Woodchopper. I used Moroccan Red on top of the RIO.
Remember, Basswood has it's own color so take advantage of that. However, it also changes some depending on where you buy it. I used to use only RIO in my earlier years as I bought my wood from a mill in Arkansas and it had a distinct yellow color to it. When I found out about the beauty of northern wood I had to adjust as that wood was much lighter. So, I started adding yellow ochre to balance it out. One thing I have never done is to add any white to the mix. I only apply a skin wash up to the eyes, never on the forehead. That area I leave completely free of color. But, lately even this rule has an exception in that when I do a figure without a hat and I want the "farmers tan" of skin not exposed to the sun I will apply a very thin wash of pure white to get a fish-belly look to the top of the head. A few 'liver' spots here and there also makes the topknot more interesting. Those are just a heavier white wash. |

| | Re: question for lynn Arnie, I don't know the Brand name of the color you are looking for but have found, anyways locally, they don't carry many of the Delta Ceramcoat paint anymore. May have to find a different hue of the red you are looking for that is close to the color you want. I know, No help to ya eh? |

| | Re: question for lynn Regular red would work. I just like the Moroccan type as it's a much richer color. |

| | Re: question for lynn Thanks everyone for the help. I'm trying to finish a carving in grand style and during this post I had an epiphany!! (try and spell that without a dictionary) When I first started carving I had not the slightest clue of the time honored pastime of sitting under the tree with penknife and branch passing time. Now I find I'm studying anatomy, body porportions, facial expressions( I can't have a conversation with my friends for staring at their heads and facial expressions)Learning to draw, studying my color wheel, learning tree composition, gain direction and now wood color, angles for sharpening, glueology, and now I find I can,t hog all the knowledge MY WIFE HAS HAD TO LEARN FIRST AID!!!!!! Arnie PS. Thanks for tip on the stanely 199
