| | Re: Price of cottonwood bark Greg,
They sell it up here for $9.95 a pound and then you have to pay the shipping. I just refuse to pay that kind of money for bark. I do have a friend of mine in British Columbia who will ship it to me for a whole lot less than that so all it costs me is the shipping. I think I might take a trip out west next year and load up a truck and trailer with the stuff.

| | Re: Price of cottonwood bark Hello check out this web site http://home.bresnan.net/~albisso/
He sent me this email Thanks for the inquiry. I sell the bark by the pound $3 - $4 per pound depending on the pieces. I would say that a good 2 foot piece would weigh around 2.5 lbs. and would cost around $10 plus shipping. If you only got one piece, shipping would probably cost more than the bark (ships from 59106). I recommend getting a larger shipments to reduce your per piece shipping cost but I am happy to sent you any amount that you want.

I hope this helps Mick |

| | Re: Price of cottonwood bark Eight to ten dollars a pound sounds high, but then, I have a pickup load of the plains cottonwood. Have enough problems keeping it locally as the word has spread. Plains cootonwood bark out layers is harder than the northern and that may be why many do not carve in it as it does dull a knife fast. No matter how much cleaning to do to it, you can never get all the grit from it. ![001[1]3424](http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/images/smilies/001[1]3424.gif) |

| | | Re: Price of cottonwood bark I've been buying my bark on Ebay, in fact have another box coming my way, bought it wednesday, the Seller name is Stix74, not pushing him, just have been happy with my bark he has sent so far, have purchased three times, He boxes up 25 lbs of bark and the ships it out. Comes out of Monatana and to Buffalo my shipping was $26 plus I paid $30 for the box, total $56 which is about $2.00/lb. The bark you see in my carvings has been almost all his pieces except maybe 1-3 items.
Hope that help some of you out. You can check out shipping costs ahead of time by using your zip code and his to see how much shipping would be to your home.

| | Re: Price of cottonwood bark I have been carving for a number of years and I am curious about the type of cottonwood bark you use, We have cottonwood trees everywhere here, at least I am told it is cottonwood, when the tree is cut, or dies the bark comes off in the drying process, usually it is from 2 to 3 inches thick, and depending on the age of the tree, from 4 to five inches wide, to two or three feet long. Does this sound like the same stuff your useing? if so this last year we burned a few thousand dollars worth in the firepit at my RV Park. I haven't heard of it being used as a carving medium here, and just found this forum today. |

| | Re: Price of cottonwood bark I usually collect my bark either around here or when I go to Minnesota I have a couple places I can collect from. The bark isn't as thick or large as Montana/Colorado bark but carves and finishes nicely.
A friend recently told me that his parents have two cottonwoods on their farm that are dead standing and the bark is starting to sheet off. I hope to get out there soon and see how much I can collect. The bark from the last tree I found lasted me almost a year. |

| | Re: Price of cottonwood bark gee whiz Greg,
Hey buddy, I always tried to treat you fair....and visa-versa
I'm not looking for new customers, But there are a lot of people in Montana who could use a few bucks, none of them asking that high price. More than once I was taken advantage of by people from back east asking for help finding and harvesting a big load of bark.
Colin...same with the people up in your prairies and back woods.. you have a good retirement, I'm sure..You get good money for your carvings. When you go, treat the natives right, it's worth 5 bucks a pound just for the experience. Especially if the bark is of good quality and size.
I've been at it 32 years. I've given away more than more I sold... until about 6 years ago.
