Default Re: pre-stain wood conditioner..

We use the minwax prestain on all our furniture pieces. It comes in both a waterbased and voc. It makes a big difference in how a board stains but I don't think it will seal up a carving for your application. We use a craftpaint type sealer avialible at your local craft supply store. We paint all our pieces with acrylic paint and for most of my santas we paint directly on the wood.
