I have been trying to find a project to do with some kids in the neighborhood, and I thought about potato carving. The problem is I have no idea how to do it, so if anybody has an idea please let me know. Thank you in advance for your time. Casey |

Just try a couple of simple nomes. Pointed hat notch in some ears cut back cheeks to make nose simple lips may be pointed chin. Just play with it. Curt

Yams are really fun, and for kids too, You can use a paring knife and make the carving sit it aside for a few days and i shrinks and wrinkles and pretty characatures become homely have a great time

I've done quite a bit of soap carving with kids and I find yam carving is much easier. With soap, you kinda chip and scrape because it chunks off, but you can actually carve the tater with a paring knife and a gouge. A paring knife and a small melon baller or a slightly sharpened baby food spoon (picked up at a flee market) are some basic tools if you don't want them using your carving tools.Spirit-looking carving (face, hat, beard) are neat applications, although just about anything you can carve in wood, can be done in a yam. If you use your carving tools, be sure to clean them thoroughly after the project. Donna T

Doesn't the tater rot after awhile? How do you prevent it from rotting?
