| | Poplar Indian bust I carve 2 smaller carvings this past Sat. This one is a Indian carved in a Poplar log. Hes 6 inches X 12 inches, bark still on the back of him.
Theres alot I would like to change about him but ohhh well,I cant re do all the mistakes I dont like about him.
If I knew at the time I carved him that I was going to paint him,I would have made his eyes alot different, plus his chin is too thick, but once Im through painting a carving,I dont re carve it. Poplar wood doesnt have the nice grains like other wood or I would have left him as a natural wooden finish.
Thks for allowing me to show him here~TnArtist

| | Re: Poplar Indian bust Those are some small carvings Tn, and yes, a few of us carved our rendition Jeff Phares NA with with head. I use poplar now and again...and lately, I've been using lumbardi poplar. It doesn't take oil very well but its a nice neutral medium for carving as its usually not too hard. Thanks for sharing your latest pics.

| | Re: Poplar Indian bust Those are some nice carving. I can't seem to get the details (wrinkles) in the face like that. I liked both the painted and unpainted. really not sure which one I like best. What did you use to paint the face? Thanks for sharing |

| | Re: Poplar Indian bust Patrick, the poplar is not too hard plus is soild white,Ive not satined any but bet it would just turn black and soak in is why I painted the Indian. It hasnt any pretty grains like cherry, etc. I didnt know who did the NA with the cat hide, just saw it one time and tried twice to carve it. Its like the mtn man, alot of people carve him,I try alot of times with him also. I dont know about lumbuard poplar but sounds like a good wood. Most of my wood is found wood,Ive never bought any new wood. Relief caving is my thing but try more deeper carving at times like this NA. Thanks for your input Patrick.
