Default Pinewood Derby Car

My daughter recently joined AWANA at the church we have been attending and it is coming to the end of their year. Every year they have a Pinewood Derby. For those of you who are not familiar with the process, they give you a block of wood and 4 wheels and you can do whatever you want with the car as long as it is fast and under 5 ounces. We decided to make our car a father/daugher car. Of course the woodcarver in me came out and I decided to carve a face in the upper half of the car, and let her paint her rainbow and flowers on the bottom half of the car.

Needless to say our car wasn't very fast. I didn't realize that there are special things you have to do to the wheels to make them go fast. My daugher wanted to win a trophy and our car never crossed the finish line in the 6 races that we ran. I didn't realize that they gave trophies for the top winners and also picked a "Best Design" car. We didn't win a race, but she got to bring home a trophy for getting Best Design out of the 40 cars that entered the competition. She was so proud!!

For any of you who like a challange, this would be a good project. I have other ideas about what I may do next year, but being short on time I stuck with something I know! Thanks for taking a look!! Can you tell that Daddy is a little excited for her too?

Blake

Our church has the AWANA (Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed) and we always have two sessions at church where everyone works on their cars. Weights are added, wheels trued up and graphite applied. I usually take a small band saw and cut out the designs the kids come up with. It is a really fun time. For all envolved.

Your car looked great. And I could tell your daughter was very pleased. Plus Fox Chapel has a couple of books with designs and speed secrets. And remember, they will race again next year. Unless of course our Lord comes back before then.

Congratulations to your daughter and you on your win.

See, you proved yourself wrong - it doesn't need to go fast as long as it looks good.

I did the same thing for my grandson, only we could only cut the car out on a bandsaw. I f I knew we could carve like you did I probably would have tried that too. Well, theres always next year, maybe. fred k
