Default Pencil Head

Hi,

I'm currently in the process of making a blanket chest and there was a lot of idle time between glue ups.

Well, I got kinda lonely sitting there waiting for the glue to set, sorta like watching paint dry. So I decided to get out my Seahorse Whittler and carve a pencil head to keep me company.

I grab'd a chunk O' bass out of the scrap barrel and proceeded to whittle.

I didn't have any pattern in mind, just figured the wood will lead the way.

When I finished carving I used a torch to singe the wood a bit, then used my pen burner to get some detail.

I'll make a base for him and put em next to my bench for companionship Cheers.

Good job! Gotta give him a name now.. *grin*

Do we get to see a picture of the blanket chest when its done too? Will you be doing some carving on the chest?

I too have a 'buddy' on my work table to keep me company. He is in charge of my dust mask. *grin* He's the first stump I've ever worked on. The second stump dude is up on the shelf ..waiting...

He looks kinda French to me. When I was carving him I was sorta thinking about French fur trappers. He has a coon skin hat but it doesn't really show up in the pictures.

Marci,

He has a name, Pencil Head. Every time I make a mistake, I'm going to look right him and say, dang Pencil Head!

The blanket chest won't get any carving done to it. It's being made for a customer that is going to ship it to his son in Ireland. I'm being real fussy with the construction so it won't be done for a couple more weeks.

I have simular blanket chests on my web site if ya want to take a peek.

Brian,
I like your pencil head very much. Good company for you. The chests on your web site are wonderful. That is fine woodworking.....very envious of your skills.

Those are gorgeous blanket chests! I really like the idea of drawers underneath. And the story of the family having their own tree made into keepsakes.. I really loved that.

Thanks for pointing the way to your site, I had an enjoyable tour through it.

Thanks for the kind words! I haven't updated my web site in quite awhile, I guess I better get busy.

Just want to say that I have enjoyed looking at everyones carvings when they post them on the different threads and in the gallery. Visiting this forum the last few months has inspired me to get my knives and chisels out and have a stab at carving again.

Thanks,Brian...

Brian, how ever do you carve that small? Mr. Pencil head is terrific a fine bit of carving in deed.

Thanks Kathie.

I had a good grip on him while I was carving. He did hit the floor a couple of times though.

I did have trouble holding him while using the propane torch . Not really, just joking.

I was going to use my Mapp gas torch at first but I'm glad I went with the propane. The Mapp would of crisped him real good.

I too was admiring Marci's bench and work. I like the way she has everything organized, something I can't lay claim to.
