I was reading the new issue of WCI and read the article about the painted turtle and it referred to pattern making and I was wondering what exactly that was all about? So if someone could fill me in that would be great. Thanks,

| Andy... I think what you're referring to is that the authors of the article, Gordon and Marsha Stiller, are well known in the carving community for their carving patterns. If you decide to carve something and need a pattern for it you can contact them to see if they have what you need. Does this help?

A lot of carvers of wildlife make their own patterns from photos or study skins (yep, those are the skins of real animals or birds). A lot of trophy catch-and-release fishermen take accurate photos and measurements of their catch before releasing them back into the environment. Some carvers and taxidermists then make "replicas" of those record catches. And some people like the Stillers make patterns of all sorts of species, and must spend hundreds of hours researching each pattern. So for those of us who don't care to take the time to make all our own patterns, these suppliers are a very useful resource. Gordon Stiller Wildlife Patterns for Carvers - StillerPatterns.com And no I don't shill for them...they just have good patterns! Al |
