Default Painted Heron

I carved the Heron earlier this summer, someone wanted to buy it but asked if I could paint it like an other one I did. Since the tree had a knot and was discolored on one side, I agreed. I'm glad I did.

Not only can you carve but you can paint too Bruce. I expect you'll have a happy customer there.

thanks so much for the kind words, I painted for many years before I started carving, so it comes in handy. I think more of my carvings will be painted, mostly because the bigger wood I use is Elm, not much of a wood grain. I'd like to have access to better quality trees like Oak or Walnut, where the polished grain really looks nice. The grain in Elm disappears shortly after the sun is on it as most of you already know. Anyway here's a view of the other side of the heron.

thanks again

Man oh man, the Heron is excellent, we live right on the banks of the Grand River here in Ontario and we have herons land right on our lawn quite often. I had a cruise thru your web pages, it's a treat to see such great talent. Only in Canada eh! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Fred, coming from a true master I'll take that as a compliment. Your work is truly amazing. I would like to be even close to your caliber. I use Elm, it's not a real good carving wood for detail or grain color, even when stained. I painted for many years so I thought I would combine the two, I too love the look of wood grain and would only hope to be in a position to carve commissioned works like you do.

thank you for your comment

Bruce
