Default Outside the box for me.

Up till this time I have only carved cotton wood , bass wood and a few walking sticks , out of caragana. Then I seen a cane on the forum made by Shawn Cipa. I read that he made if from mahogany. It said that it was not to bad to carve.
Well I don't know what kind of mahogany he had but the chunk I had was pure murder on all my tools. I don't think I will be carving that kind of wood again in the near furture. But I did finish the project and feel good about it. Now back to my spirit faces and whimical carving. I am amazed , I really do not belive I finished it. Thanks for putting up with my whinning.

Wayne You did a great job on the Cane Handle, I find that the more effort it takes the more appreciation you will have for it.

I like your cane topper.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the mahogany. I haven't had that problem, yet. I have noticed that the way wood is dried will have an effect on the way it carves. The wood that is kiln dried will seem to be harder to carve than the wood that is dried naturally.

Hey Wayne,
first let me say great job on the cane handle. There are several different kinds of mahogany, someone once told me that there are about 150 different species, I don't know if that is a fact or not. I do know that I have 3 different kinds. Two of them are great to carve and they finish nice. The third one is the prettiest piece but as hard as concrete, and just as heavy. It is 2 1/2" thick and about 14" by 14" and the grain is so nice that it looks like its laminated, but it must weigh 25 lbs. So it's not all the same.
